Abstract
This study was carried out to understand the status of perceptions for appearance and cosmetic surgery among university freshmen. The author conducted a questionnaire for 1,615 students in a university from Mar 11 to 15, 2004. The data collected was evaluated using the SPSS 10.0 statistical package, and the changes of satisfactions between before and after the operation were analyzed using a Wilcoxon signed rank test. The study subjects contained 827 (51.2%) males, and the major age group was the 19 years (1,089 cases, 67.4%). 319 cases (19.8%) were interested in appearance, 220 cases (13.6%) were satisfied with their appearance, and 183 cases (11.3%) have experienced in stress due to their appearances. Female was significantly lower satisfaction, and higher experience of stress than male (P<0.01). The major opinion for a trend in taking the serious view of appearance was ¡¯appearance is also the way to promote their esteem¡¯ (516 cases, 32.0%). The experience of cosmetic surgery was 37 cases (2.3%), and was significantly higher in females (4.2%, P<0.01). And 287 cases (17.8%) want to be operated in future. The major reasons of cosmetic surgery were ¡¯to acquire self esteems¡¯ in 150 cases (46.3%) and ¡¯to be beautiful¡¯ in 94 cases (29.0%) etc. The satisfaction after operation was 3.6¡¾0.6, and significantly higher than before operation (2.9¡¾0.9). The experience of cosmetic surgery in our study were low among university freshmen. But it is expected that cosmetic surgery will be increased as a increase of desires for cosmetic surgery.
